Juicy, cheesy, and perfectly savory, this Classic Patty Melt is the ultimate comfort sandwich. With tender ground beef, gooey melted cheese, and sweet caramelized onions, it’s simple to make yet packed with flavor.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef (80/20)
4 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar/Gruyère)
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2–3 tbsp butter
Salt and black pepper to taste
Optional: turkey bacon, mushrooms, or secret sauce
Instructions
Shape the Patties: Divide ground beef into 4 even patties. Season with salt and black pepper.
Caramelize Onions: Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook slowly until golden brown, about 15–20 minutes.
Toast Bread: Butter the outer sides of the bread slices. Toast in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown.
Assemble the Sandwich: Place a slice of cheese on the bottom slice of bread, add the beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side out.
Grill the Patty Melt: Cook in the skillet for 3–4 minutes per side until bread is crispy and cheese is melted. Press gently with a spatula for even grilling.
Serve: Slice diagonally and serve warm. Pair with pickles, fries, or a fresh salad.
