Description

Enjoy a hearty and comforting Amish Hamburger Steak Bake, packed with juicy beef patties, creamy sauce, and melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 cups potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or smoked gouda)

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup or tomato-based sauce

  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp paprika

  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)

  • 12 tbsp butter or vegetable oil (for greasing the baking dish)

  • Optional: 2–3 slices cooked turkey or beef bacon, chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or oil.

  • Prep Ingredients: Slice potatoes thinly. Finely chop onion and mince garlic.

  • Sauté Aromatics: In a skillet, sauté onions and garlic in a little butter or oil until fragrant and translucent.

  • Layer Potatoes: Arrange a single layer of sliced potatoes at the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

  • Add Onion and Garlic: Spread the sautéed onions and garlic evenly over the potato layer.

  • Form Patties: Shape ground beef into 4–6 patties, depending on size preference, and place them on top of the onions.

  • Pour Sauce: Pour the cream of mushroom soup or tomato-based sauce evenly over the patties, making sure it covers them and seeps into the potato layer.

  • Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly on top of the sauce. Optionally, add chopped cooked turkey or beef bacon for extra flavor.

  • Bake Covered: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes to lock in moisture.

  • Bake Uncovered: Remove foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

  • Rest and Garnish: Let the bake rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme if desired.

  • Serve: Serve hot with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or dinner rolls.

Notes

For a richer flavor, you can mix a spoonful of sour cream or cream cheese into the sauce before baking.
